Lab Report APA Format Example: 8 Section Samples
These samples come from one invented experiment on retrieval practice and vocabulary, written for this guide; the student, school and data are not real. The reference entry comes from our citation engine, using a real 2006 article. The sentences and in-text forms were written by hand.
SectionThe title page and first page of text.
Sample text in APA 7 styleRetrieval Practice and Vocabulary Recall: A Classroom Experiment
Bold, title case, and repeated at the top of the first page of text.
SectionThe opening background, past tense for a specific study.
Sample text in APA 7 styleRoediger and Karpicke (2006) found that taking a memory test improved long-term retention more than rereading did.
A narrative citation names the authors and puts the year in parentheses.
SectionThe last sentence of the introduction.
Sample text in APA 7 styleWe predicted that students who took a practice test would recall more words than students who restudied the list.
State the prediction so the results can support it or not.
SectionA short description of who took part.
Sample text in APA 7 styleForty-eight students (24 per condition) from two sections of an introductory psychology course took part.
Numerals for 24, since it is 10 or above.
SectionWhat happened, in order.
Sample text in APA 7 styleParticipants studied a list of 20 nouns for 5 min. They then took a practice test or restudied the list, and returned two days later for a final test.
Past tense, numerals before units and for numbers of 10 and above.
SectionThe test and its result, with symbols in italics.
Sample text in APA 7 styleThe retrieval practice group recalled more words (M = 14.2, SD = 3.1) than the restudy group (M = 11.5, SD = 3.4), t(46) = 2.87, p = .006, d = 0.83.
Invented data. No zero before .006, which can't exceed 1; a zero before 0.83.
SectionWhat the result means, in the present tense.
Sample text in APA 7 styleThese results suggest that retrieving words from memory strengthens learning more than studying them again.
Link the result back to the introduction.
SectionThe article cited in the introduction.

How to Format a Lab Report in APA, Step by Step
Follow these steps once your experiment is done and your data are analyzed.
- Read the assignment. Check whether your instructor wants an abstract, a running head or specific section names.
- Set up the page. Apply the APA paper settings: margins, font, spacing and page numbers, as in our format guidelines.
- Make the title page. Add the title, your name, affiliation, course, instructor and due date.
- Write the sections. Use introduction, method, results and discussion, with the right heading levels.
- Report the results. Put statistics in the text, add tables and figures with numbers, and apply the italic symbol rules.
- Add references. Start a new page, list every cited source alphabetically and use a hanging indent.
APA Lab Report Format: What APA Does and Doesn't Say
Most students learn APA lab report format from a handout, not from APA, so an APA format for a lab report mixes APA rules with that handout. APA Style's sample papers page offers a student paper and a professional paper, plus student templates for several kinds of assignments, including a quantitative study. It doesn't list a lab report template. So a lab report is a science assignment written in APA style, and your instructor decides the details of the APA lab report format you follow.
What is fixed and what is common practice
APA 7 does set the rules behind APA lab report formatting: title page, heading levels, tables, numbers, statistics, citations and the reference list. The sections in a lab report APA format example (introduction, method, results and discussion) are common practice in the sciences, so follow your course handout where it differs.
Where the tool fits
Build the first page of your APA lab report format with the APA title page generator, then use the citation tool above, or the APA Citation Machine, for the reference list. For margins, fonts and spacing, our APA format guidelines cover the whole paper, so this guide doesn't repeat them.
APA Format for a Lab Report: Sections in Order
APA's order of pages page lists the pieces of a student paper in this sequence: title page, abstract, text, references, footnotes, tables, figures and appendices. It adds that student papers generally don't include an abstract unless requested. Here is how a typical APA format for a lab report fills that order, and the same list works as a lab report APA format example outline:
- Title page. Title, your name, affiliation, course, instructor and date.
- Abstract (if required). A short summary on page 2, with keywords if asked.
- Introduction. Background, the question and your hypothesis. It opens the text under the paper's title.
- Method. Participants, materials and procedure.
- Results. What you found, with statistics, tables and figures.
- Discussion. What the results mean, limits and next steps.
- References. Every source you cited.
- Appendices. Raw data, instructions or other long material, if your instructor wants them.
Your course may differ
Some chemistry and biology courses change the APA format for a lab report, asking for a purpose, a list of equipment, observations and calculations instead. In that case keep the section names your instructor gives you and use APA for everything else: headings, numbers, citations and references.
APA Lab Report Formatting: Headings and Heading Levels
APA lab report formatting relies on APA's five heading levels. Most reports need only the first two or three levels.
| Level | Format | Lab report use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Centered, bold, title case | Method, Results, Discussion |
| 2 | Flush left, bold, title case | Participants, Materials, Procedure |
| 3 | Flush left, bold italic, title case | Parts of a Level 2 section |
| 4 | Indented, bold, title case, ending with a period; text runs on | Rarely needed |
| 5 | Indented, bold italic, title case, ending with a period; text runs on | Rarely needed |
No “Introduction” heading
APA says not to add an “Introduction” heading at the start of a paper: the title, repeated at the top of the first page of text, serves as the Level 1 heading. Place Method, Results and Discussion at Level 1, and Participants, Materials and Procedure at Level 2. That mapping is common practice, not an APA rule for lab reports, so match your handout.
Use only the levels you need in APA lab report formatting
Most lab reports stop at Level 2. Add a deeper level only when a subsection really needs its own parts.
Title Page and Abstract for a Lab Report
APA's student title page has seven elements. Center the paper title in bold, three to four lines down the page. Then, each on its own double-spaced line, add your name, your department and school, the course number and name, your instructor and the due date. Put the page number 1 at the top right. Student papers don't include a running head unless your instructor or school asks for one.
The abstract, only if you're asked
The APA abstract and keywords guide sets the format: the label “Abstract” centered and bold on page 2, then a single double-spaced paragraph with no indent. The maximum is 250 words unless your instructor says otherwise.
Keywords
In APA format for a lab report, if you add keywords, put them one line below the abstract after an italic “Keywords:” label, indented like a paragraph. Use three to five, lowercase except for proper nouns, separated by commas with no ending punctuation.
Introduction and Method: Participants, Materials, Procedure
Introduction
In a lab report APA format example, the introduction moves from the broad topic to your specific question. Cite the studies you build on, describe the gap, and end with your hypothesis. Write about specific earlier studies in the past tense: Roediger and Karpicke (2006) found… and use the present perfect for general research activity, as in researchers have studied this effect.
Method: participants
In APA lab report formatting, say who took part and how many. APA's numerals page says to use numerals for 10 and above and words for zero through nine, so write the study had 40 participants and three groups.
Method: materials
List the tools, surveys or apparatus you used. In a chemistry lab, this is where measured amounts go, with numerals before units such as 5 mL.
Method: procedure
Describe what happened, in order, in the past tense.
Results: Statistics, Numbers, Tables and Figures
In an APA lab report format example, the results section reports what you found, in the past tense, without interpreting it. APA's numbers and statistics guide sets these rules for statistics:
- Use italics for letters that are statistical symbols, such as M, SD, t, p and N. Greek letters stay upright.
- Put a space before and after a mathematical operator: M = 7.7.
- Don't define common symbols such as M, SD, F, t, df and p.
- Report exact p values to two or three decimals (p = .006), and write p < .001 in text for smaller values.
- Omit the zero before the decimal when a statistic can't exceed 1, such as a p value or correlation; include it when it can.
- Give means and standard deviations on integer-scale data to one decimal and most other statistics to two.
Tables and figures
In APA lab report formatting, use a table when readers need to compare several numbers, and don't repeat the same statistics in the text and a table. APA's table page puts the number in bold above the title, the title in italic title case, notes below, and no vertical borders. Our APA table format guide shows every step, including notes and placement.
Refer to each table by number in your text, as in Table 1 shows the mean scores.
| Element | Example (invented data) |
|---|---|
| Descriptive statistics | (M = 14.2, SD = 3.1) |
| Test statistic and p | t(46) = 2.87, p = .006 |
| Effect size | d = 0.83 |
Discussion, References and Appendices
Discussion
In APA format for a lab report, start with your main finding and say whether it supported your hypothesis. Then compare it with the studies from your introduction and admit limits such as sample size. APA's verb tense guidance puts implications, conclusions, limitations and future directions in the present tense: The results indicate… Future research should explore…
References
Start the list on a new page, titled “References” in bold and centered. APA's reference list setup page asks for alphabetical order, a 0.5-inch hanging indent and double spacing. Every in-text citation needs an entry and every entry needs a citation. For multi-author sources, see our guide to citing two authors in APA.
Appendices
Long material in an APA lab report format example, such as the full stimulus list or raw data goes in an appendix after the references, if your instructor requests one.
Past vs. Present Tense in a Lab Report
Tense is where many lab reports slip, even with good APA lab report formatting elsewhere. APA's verb tense page lists past tense for your method and results in any APA lab report format, such as Participants took a survey or Scores decreased, and for specific studies in a literature review. It lists the present tense for discussing implications and for conclusions, limitations and future directions.
Keep a paragraph consistent
APA's page also says to keep one verb tense consistent within a paragraph and across adjacent paragraphs.
Example Lab Report With APA 7 Format: A Full Outline
Here is a complete outline, an example lab report with APA 7 format that you can adapt. The experiment, student and numbers are invented for this guide; only the 2006 article is real. Use it as a model for APA lab report formatting.
Title page. Retrieval Practice and Vocabulary Recall: A Classroom Experiment. Maya Johnson, Department of Psychology, Lakeview Community College, PSYC 101: Introduction to Psychology, Dr. Alvarez, October 26, 2026.
Abstract (if required). Forty-eight students studied 20 nouns, then took a practice test or restudied. Two days later, the practice-test group recalled more words. Keywords: retrieval practice, memory, vocabulary.
Retrieval Practice and Vocabulary Recall: A Classroom Experiment (the title again, as the first heading of the text)
The introduction reviews Roediger and Karpicke (2006), states the gap, and ends with the hypothesis.
Method (Level 1): Participants (Level 2) lists 48 students; Materials describes the 20-noun list; Procedure describes 5 min of study, the practice test or restudy, and the final test two days later.
Results (Level 1): the t test above, plus Table 1.
Discussion (Level 1): the main finding, its meaning, limits such as one class and one list of words, and ideas for future research.
References (new page): the Roediger and Karpicke entry shown in the examples, with a hanging indent.
Common Mistakes in an APA Lab Report
Check for these slips in APA lab report formatting before you submit:
- Treating the section list as an APA rule. APA has no lab report template; follow your handout where it differs.
- An “Introduction” heading. The title does that job.
- Statistics in plain text. Italicize M, SD, t and p.
- A zero before p. Write p = .006, not p = 0.006.
- Wrong tense. Past for method and results, present for implications.
- Vertical lines in a table. APA tables use horizontal rules only.
- Unnumbered tables. Number each one and mention it in the text.
- Citations without references. Match every in-text citation to an entry.
Final check
As a last step for your APA lab report format, run the finished reference list through the APA citation generator, and compare every table with the numbers in your text. For more APA help, browse the student guides hub, or see our guide to how to cite a quote in APA.
APA Lab Report Format FAQ
What is the APA format for a lab report?
Title page, abstract if your instructor requires one, introduction, method, results, discussion, references and appendices, formatted with APA 7 headings, tables, numbers and citations. APA has no official lab report template.
Does APA 7 have a lab report template?
No. APA's sample papers page offers student and professional papers and a quantitative study template, but no lab report. The usual sections are common practice.
Does an APA lab report need an abstract?
Only if your instructor asks. APA says student papers generally don't include one unless requested. If you write one, keep it to 250 words or fewer.
What headings go in an APA lab report?
Commonly Method, Results and Discussion at Level 1 (centered, bold), and Participants, Materials and Procedure at Level 2 (flush left, bold). The paper's title serves as the first heading.
How do you format statistics in an APA lab report?
Italicize symbols such as M, SD, t and p, put spaces around operators, report exact p values (p = .006), and use p < .001 for smaller ones.
Should a lab report use past or present tense?
Past tense for the method and results; present tense for implications, conclusions, limitations and future research.
Where do tables go in an APA lab report?
Either in the text after you first mention them, or each on its own page after the references. Number each table and give it an italic title case title.
Do you use numerals or words for numbers in a lab report?
Numerals for 10 and above, and words for zero through nine, with exceptions such as numbers before units, decimals, percentages and statistics, which always use numerals.
Do I need a title page for a lab report in APA?
Yes, a student title page with the title, your name, affiliation, course, instructor and due date, unless your instructor says otherwise.
